Local traders get a place on the high street as new unit opens in Prospect Shopping centre

14th July 2014

prospect-upmarket-summer-caribbean-bandLocal traders from Hull and East Yorkshire have their own place on the high street after the opening of a new unit in Prospect Shopping Centre.

After the success of UPmarket, which has been a regular fixture at the shopping centre on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month since November 2012, market organiser Eve Lomax has now opened a retail unit from the centre to give small local traders a permanent base.

Eden – which will be a huge benefit to traders in the region in terms of giving them a platform from which to showcase their goods – opened on Saturday, July 12th.

Eve said: “Eden will now be a base for traders across the Humber to come and have a place on the high street every day.

“The idea came about after we set up a Pop-up Shop in December for a month. We found that people would come to find us and if they enjoyed our produce, they had a place where they could come back and try something different without having to wait.

“We will still have UPmarket on the usual dates along with the unit, but Eden will give those traders a place to build their business and sell their goods without rental fees they would usually not be able to afford straight away.”

The shop has been named after Eve’s first venture, Eden Baby, which sold baby clothes while Eve was on maternity leave.

Eve also said the name had an alternative significance for the traders.

She said: “Eden represents the start of something which will continue to grow. This base for us is the start of a new beginning. We have been involved with UPmarket for a while, but this unit gives traders the opportunity to start from scratch and grow with a secure infrastructure around them.

“We already have 13 permanent traders setting up in the unit on a daily basis, with another 10 having their products available to sell, so there is a huge variety in the store.

“I’m anticipating Eden will have a lot more interest from other traders once we get up and running, but there is already a wide range available in store. We are still encouraging traders to come to us if they are interested in joining us.”

Prospect Shopping Centre manager Lee Appleton said the opening of Eden was fantastic news for the centre.

He said: “We already have a wide range of choice for our shoppers, but the opening of Eden represents our support for local traders across Hull and East Yorkshire.

“UPmarket has been brilliant since it started in 2012 and people now come into the city centre on those days just to go to the market.

“Eden offers our customers something different and I am sure it will be a huge success. We are looking forward to seeing them grow.”
